feral pigeonAn influx of feral pigeons is causing a problem in one of Christchurch’s most popular heritage sites.

Riccarton House and Bush manager Rob Dally said thepigeons have become an extreme pest in the past few months, spreading disease and threatening other native species.

Dally said the pigeons have become attracted to the suburb, as a result of the city’s earthquakes.

“They no longer have roosting areas on the CBD’s tall buildings, so they’re hunting for new territory to take over,” he said.

Dally has made a submission on the city council’s Draft Annual Plan, calling for a pigeon control programme to be carried out.
