Swallows inhabit gardens, marshes, moors and fields. They are also commonly found in open structures such as barns or under eaves.
Swallows eat airborne insects along with berries and seeds.
How to Deter Barn Swallows
Barn Swallows migrate to North America every spring. Swallows are known for building mud nests in barns, on beams or horizontal surfaces under eaves or overhangs. If swallows chose your structure to nest on the previous year, there is a good chance they may return. To prevent swallows from nesting on your structure, it is best to have bird deterrents in place before they come back.
Important: Swallows are protected under the Federal Migratory Bird Act which states that once an egg is laid in a nest, the nest is to remain intact until the hatchlings have left. Avoid hefty fines, call Bird-B-Gone at 1-800-392-6915 for advice or an installer in your area.
♦ Let swallows know your structure is no longer available to nest on by temporarily installing a physical barrier such as bird netting under eaves. You can install Bird Netting at an angle to block the birds from the protected portion of the wall under an eave or overhang.
♦ Clean past nesting sites. If possible, clean and disinfect any previous nesting areas to remove scents that might be attracting the bird back to the site. No Nasty Nest can be installed under eaves to prevent nesting.
♦ Bird Slope can be used as another barrier between the swallow and a desired nesting spot.
♦ Give the swallows an alternative by installing a swallow nesting box or platform on or near the home.
♦ Sound deterrents such as the Bird Chase Super Sonic play swallow distress calls, letting swallows know the area is not safe to nest in.
♦ Hang visual deterrents such as the Flash Tape, Predator Eye Balloon and Reflective Eye Diverters.
