American Crow
Recommended Deterrents
Description
The American Crow is a black bird averaging around 18 inches long. Crows have black feathers, beaks, legs and feet. Crows and ravens look very much alike and are often misidentified for each other. Crows differ from ravens in appearance by their shorter, thinner beaks, and are about six inches shorter than a raven.
Habitat
American Crows live in a variety of different settings. They can be found in parks, woodland areas, orchards, farms, as well as urban and suburban settings.
Diet
American Crows are omnivorous, they will eat anything from seeds, grains, and fruits, to invertebrates, carrion (scavenged carcass), and small animals.
How to Deter Crows
The American Crow is known to be one of the most intelligent species of bird. If you address the reason they are attracted to your property, you will have better success at getting them to move on.
Habitat modification
-
Crows live in tight knit communities that work together to defend their territories. They may choose a high point on your home or building as a lookout point.
-
Keep crows off roof lines and ledges by installing Bird Spikes or other physical bird deterrents to prevent them from landing.
Remove any food source
-
Crows are omnivorous scavengers eating anything from seeds and grain to invertebrates and discarded food in garbage. Block crows from any possible open food sources such as garbage cans.
-
Crows will sometimes tear up lawns looking for grubs. You can treat your lawn for grubs to keep the crows from coming back. The Scarecrow Motion Activated Sprinkler also works well at keeping crows off lawn areas.
Scare Tactics
-
Sound deterrents alert crows of nearby danger by broadcasting predator calls and distress calls which will make them want to flee the area. The Bird Chase Super Sonic is ideal trees where crows like to roost.
-
Hang visual deterrents such as Mylar Flash Tape or Reflective Eye Diverters to scare crows from outdoor spaces.
