get rid of woodpeckersWe have a cabin in the woods and have a bad woodpecker problem. With so many trees around, why have they chosen our house? What is the best way to prevent them from causing more damage?

Woodpeckers usually cause two kinds of problems on buildings. Since they hammer on hollow trees and other resonant objects to claim their territories, if they find a nice sounding board on your house, you may have to put up netting or another physical barrier to keep the birds away. A more serious problem occurs when woodpeckers find that your wood siding is full of carpenter bees or other insects and decide that lots of drilling and excavating is the best way to get to that food. Check to make sure you don’t have an insect infestation in your siding, and check out your local extension service or the Cornell Lab of Ornithology for additional information on visual deterrents and physical barriers you can put up to keep the woodpeckers away.

I have a problem with crows tearing up my grass… what are they looking for and how can I keep them away?get rid of crows

The crows may be doing you a favor by indicating that you have a grub (beetle larvae) infestation in your yard. Crows can actually hear the grubs chewing on the grass roots, and when they hear enough of them down there it is worth their time to dig them out of the lawn for food. Have your lawn care company take a look and recommend some treatment options. Do it yourselfers should do an internet search for methods of organic lawn grub control.
